Just bought my first car. (97 4cyl automatic) The car is currently running fine but there are occasional random small shudders and the tone/of the engine will sometimes change for a few seconds while stopped at a light or idling. Is this normal? Car seems to idle steady at 1k RPM. Thanks scottykilmer November 10, 2012 could be, only a mechanic could check it with a dealer level scan tool to be sure andrew t November 10, 2012 ok i checked for vacuum leakes and everything is good do u think my iac valve is bad scottykilmer November 10, 2012 try my video “finding engine vacuum leaks with a cigar” andrew t November 10, 2012 I Cleaned my throttle and iac valve and my idle still at 0 what should I do next 98 Honda civic coupe it’s a d16y5 scottykilmer November 11, 2012 dinosaur technology, made for outboard boat motors, I wouldn’t use it on modern cars. tehfrawg November 11, 2012 Scotty, what are your thoughts on seafoam? scottykilmer November 11, 2012 check for vacuum leaks on the system, you have some somewhere for sure. See my video ‘finding engine vacuum leaks with a cigar” Alex Roque November 11, 2012 hey scotty! i have a 98 mazda protege that is giving me the idle air control code but i have replaced it twice and it still giving me the code, i even replaced the power booster because it idles really rough when i brake . the check engine light goes on and hours later it might come off but still throwing the code, any ideas will help thanks. ezra1247 November 11, 2012 thanks keep up the great advice, mechanics can learn from you scottykilmer November 11, 2012 tons of things can do that, of course start basic by checking plugs and wires. And since the light came on, get it scanned for codes to show the problem area. ezra1247 November 11, 2012 hi my chevy lumina for the last month or so has been idling rough at lights and I can feel my steering wheel vibrate more its a little cooler now, at one point the engine got really rough and my check engine light came on.As it warmed up it improved. Maybe spark plugs ? or moisture Thanks God bless you scottykilmer November 11, 2012 I would check the thermostat first, it could be stuck open and that would make the engine run poorly. But check for vacuum leaks too, they are known for that. See my video “finding engine vacuum leaks with a cigar” scottievand November 11, 2012 Hi Scotty, I have a 97 ford explorer that idles rough. I’m pretty sure its a vacuum leak, or an intake manifold gasket problem. On a separate note, my engine temperature gauge is not functioning (stays on cold), could this sensor that is not working be causing an uneven increase in the amount of fuel the car uses? Could this be contributing to the problem of the rough idle? Best Regards, Scott. scottykilmer November 11, 2012 if that’s all you changed, I would assume something was damaged changing that part, like breaking a sensor or creating a vacuum leak on the intake system troyintwo November 11, 2012 I have idle problem on my 1999 mk1 focus changed iscv and its fine now but using too much fuel got 100 miles to £50 fuel any ideas scotty scottykilmer November 11, 2012 not normal, way too high. Do my video “finding engine vacuum leaks with a cigar” vlasktom November 11, 2012 I have a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am. It has a high idle, between 1,500 and 2,500 RPM, when in park. But when it’s in reverse or drive, it idles at about 1,000 RPM. Is this normal? I’ve already cleaned the throttle plate and IAC scottykilmer November 11, 2012 I would assume crappy used engine myself, have a compression test done by someone else to see if the engine is garbage. angels4kali November 11, 2012 A mechanic put a used engine in my car after my timing belt went out, ever since the car idles rough and stalls when the AC is on. No problems with the AC when driving, just while idling. Mechanic replaced IAC, plugs, plug wires, coil packs. and it still idles rough or stalls when AC is on. Any suggestions??? scottykilmer November 11, 2012 No, get it scanned for trouble codes. Could be a weak fuel pump though, pressure test it Earlbark November 11, 2012 Scotty, I have 93 Ford Ranger 4.0 I had a fuel pressure regulator problem and changed it but when I try to excelerate like going up a hill the truck vibrates and loses power and if I keep going the check engine light comes on can it be a idle air control vavle as well?
